About the Theme

DID YOU KNOW THAT BETWEEN 2017 AND 2021, BRAZIL'S BUDGET FOR VACCINATION ADVERTISING CAMPAIGNS DROPPED 66%?

According to the Butantan Institute, the overall vaccination rate in Brazil was only 60.7% in 2021, while the ideal rate to eradicate diseases like measles should be around 90-95%. With this in mind, we ask ourselves:

Vaccination Booklet by SUS

Why this Theme

With the recent pandemic, health has become a hot topic, especially vaccination, which has been highly controversial in recent years. With that in mind, many people have forgotten or completely neglected vaccines and diseases other than COVID-19. However, many diseases still require ongoing attention and care from the population. Here are some relevant data for the current situation:

  • Vaccination coverage for the first dose of the MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, and rubella) in Brazil dropped from 93.1% to 71.49%.

  • Polio vaccination rates fell from 84.2% to 67.7%.

  • In 2021, the overall vaccination rate in the population was 60.7% (Instituto Butantan).

  • The measles vaccine prevented more than 21 million deaths between 2000 and 2017. However, in 2020, Brazil recorded over 8,400 cases, affecting not just children.

Through a survey and several targeted interviews with people across the country, we gathered important data on vaccination. For instance:

  • Booklet

Most people organize their vaccination schedules using the SUS vaccination card

  • Oblivion

72.7% of people who are not up to date with their vaccinations, or are unsure if they are, claim that the main reason is forgetfulness

  • Lack of Organization and Information

38.3% of people are not aware of their own vaccination schedules.

  • Booklet Issues

Difficulty locating the vaccination booklet, along with the common fear of losing or damaging it.

  • Hard to Track

About 53% of people who use the vaccination booklet report some level of difficulty in following the vaccination schedule correctly.

  • Family Coordenation

The situation becomes even more complicated when individuals are responsible for managing the vaccination schedules of others, such as children, parents, or partners.

A beta app with limited reach (around 40,000 downloads on the Google Store) allows users to input their vaccinations into the app.

However, there is no detailed integration or registration process, with no email or phone number login, meaning the information is not stored in the cloud.

If users lose their phone, they will lose all the data within the app. Therefore, it's possible to argue that there is a significant market opportunity to address.

Branding

  • About the Branding

We aimed to convey the ideas of Trust, Care, Warmth, Connection, and Practicality. This is achieved through our color palette and types of illustrations, using shades of blue to represent trust and care, and light pink touches to create a sense of connection and warmth (with an additional light yellow as a tertiary color for an extra touch of warmth).

Additionally, our illustrations serve a distinct purpose by aiming to convey that they are designed for our entire population, promoting the representation of minorities and offering a more personalized experience. At the same time, we avoid excessive needle imagery, which often causes distress among people.

Conclusion

To conclude, it’s crucial to emphasize the importance of vaccines in our society. They play a fundamental role in our daily lives, as demonstrated over the past two years of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The pandemic has served as a stark reminder that public health is a shared responsibility. The effectiveness of vaccines not only protects the vaccinated individuals but also significantly contributes to herd immunity, safeguarding entire communities from infectious diseases. Therefore, it’s essential to recognize that vaccination is not just an individual or national concern—it’s a global issue that requires a collaborative and supportive approach.
